Today I want to begin by thanking God for another year of life, and opportunities for adventure. Each person chooses to celebrate their birthday differently. Usually there is cake, loved ones, and presents. I never say no to cake, but this year I chose to change things up a bit and treat myself to a little adventure to the forgotten city of Merida. Most tourist flock to the coast of Mexico to visit Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, etc. and don’t get me wrong, those places are beautiful. But if you are like me and want to discover something new, then this city is one to visit.
The story of how I chose to spend my birthday in Merida this year began with a trip to Merida with my mom for her annual health check-up. It usually consists of runs from the hospital, to nearby restaurants, to the hotel. So I decided that I needed to take the time to explore this city like a tourist.
Just a short ride outside the city there are beautiful Cenotes with crystalline waters to dive into. In the city there are so many cute café’s, some of which have been there since their colonial era; and right in the town square, in what is considered the city’s center, sits a beautiful old cathedral- a large antique structure that you have to stop and take in.
I soaked up so much inspiration from Mexican culture. I simply can’t get enough of Merida’s colors, old architecture, food and the people. It’s a gorgeous city full of inspiring things.
It’s important to be thankful, always. Happy Birthday to me!
Besos y abrazos (hugs and kisses),
